Signs and EtiquetteWhile paddling down a local water trail, you will notice a variety of signs that attempt to make your voyage a bit easier. These signs not only convey the 'rules of the road' but they also are placed to warn you of hazardous features along the way. Keep a lookout for these your next time out. Note that these are 12 inches square in dimension so they can be difficult to spot from a distance.
Private Property - No LandingDenotes owner landing or other type of private property. Landing is strictly prohibited. Stepping on land, for any length of time, is considered trespassing!
Low WireThis sign warns of an electrical or farm wire that crosses the stream. The arrow on the sign points to the wire's height.
GateThis sign indicates a cattle gate ahead. At certain points on your journey you may need to paddle through or portage around a cattle gate. If you need to open a gate to pass through, please remember to close it also!
Swift WaterMost of the streams in Dane County are slow and friendly for paddlers. On occassion though, there will be water which requires a bit of maneuvering. Usually, the swift water signs will warn of rocks that need to be avoided. Be careful to gauge your comfort level. If the water seems to fast, consider portaging or pulling over to the shore for a moment to assess the situation.
No PaddlingYou might see this sign for a variety of reasons, the most common of them being protected habitat or species, or a route that would be dangerous to paddle through. Either way, this sign is placed for safety and should not be taken lightly. |
